Subject:Re: Looking for Feedback on good speaker amp for Nord C1
It may just be the fact that I changed from a 10-year old pair of EON
15's that had been gigged to death twice over... but I splurged on a
pair of EV SxA360's a couple of months ago, and I think they are worth
every last penny. This is the first time I've ever been able to gig
without the 122 and be content with my Electro's organ tone. Acoustic
piano is gorgeous too. They are super light and compact, but they
don't feel like a tone compromise.
I run the Electro through a stereo Speakeasy VTP, then into the inputs
on the back of the Yamaha CP300, then take the XLR outs straight to
the EV's. Setup and teardown is fairly quick for a two-board stereo
rig, especially since the Electro sits right on top of the CP300.
I considered the AccuGroove Tri112L / QSC PLX1804 combo (music123.com
has the Tri112L's for a dirt-cheap $835, meaning you could get either
the SxA360's or the AccuGroove/QSC PLX 1804 combination for about the
same bottom line). I just didn't have room in the car for those big
boxes, so I didn't even bother trying them out - I bet they sound
fantastic though. Certainly if you're playing Hammond bass, the
AccuGrooves would have to be the winner there, since they are after
all bass cabs, and the SxA360's just have a 12".
There are definitely cheaper options, but I just can't skimp on
amplification anymore. I have a Kustom Coupe '72 all-tube combo for
Wurly/Rhodes/Clav, the Leslie 122 for Organ, and now the EV's for
clean full-range sounds, and on big stages I don't hesitate to bring
out every last piece of it, if the music calls for all of it.
