Subject:slightly OT: AO28 technical question

I do not have advance electronics knowledge, but I have a question
regarding the AO28 preamp.
On the straight channel line.... why are there 2 gain stages before
the expression and final stage set? Does the tone we all know come
from all three gain stages?
