Tony, that's correct.  As it was explained to me by a Yamaha rep: The S80 soundset basically came from the EX5, the S90 from the Motif, and the S90ES from the Motif ES.  The S80 and S90 Pianos had a couple of new voices that were tweaked from the original programs; the S90ES introduced new samples and voices not found in the Motif ES.

All three of the current S Series keyboards can use Yamaha Plug - In Expansion Cards.  That way, with a PLG150-AP piano card, an S80 can have piano voices that are, essentially, at the same quality level as the S90ES pianos.  A used S80 is one of best keyboard deals out there.  If you don't need the ES or Motif sounds, the S80 has a great 'cover the bases' soundset; plus you can upgrade the pianos with your choice of two different piano cards.  The organs in all three of the S Series are very viable for gigging; there are a variety of voices, plus limited drawbar settings with the four sliders provided.  Granted, it's not KB3 mode, or a dedicated clonewheel; but I've covered the bases nicely with an S90, then an S90ES, over the past several years.   Keeping your rig to two keyboards is not too difficult these days; I rarely need to take out modules/soft synths, at least currently.  Depending on the gig, I usually use any two of my three main
boards: S90ES, PC3, Motif XS 7.  That usually covers the bases more than adequately.

I think the deal was the S90es had a massive piano sound that wasn't available in any other unit.

it was my understanding the S90 had "better" or improved acoustic piano sounds.

Anybody able to give some advice on the S80 vs S90 to use mostly for

pianos and some synth sounds. Not really into a lot of synth stuff but the

need comes up occasionally and I want to stick to hauling just two keyboards.
