John,
I am thrilled that your management team has decided to design and
manufacture your products in the US. I worked for a number of years
as an automotive engineer and spent the last few years coordinating
the 'outsourcing' of engineering, design, and production of
products. In that time I conducted numerous studies in regards to
cost and quality and found that in the majority of cases it did not
make sense from either a quality OR a cost standpoint to outsource
as a matter of policy. The results of these studies repeatedly fell
on deaf ears (unfortunately) as the current group of 'stock analyst
driven' executives are unwilling to see the long term trade-offs
involved (including the probable loss of proprietary R&D knowledge).
Hats off to your team for recognizing the advantages of maintaining
those controls. The best of luck to you all.
