Yes, known as a rotosonic drum. I'd hazard a guess that Don Leslie's
preference was due in large part to the fact that on a pipe organ, the
Tremolo has little effect on lower notes, and usually the pedals are on an
entirely different wind supply, so you'd get NO tremolo in the bass at all.
