It had to do with the way the Hammond generates tones (harmonics) - up
to 9 per note are mixed together at volume levels that are set by the
drawbars. Each of the tones are carried all the way through from the
Tonewheel Generator, Keyboard and Drawbar mechanisms separately, then
mixed by the mixing transformer and fed to the preamp. Thus nine
contacts per key.
