Subject:Re: Speakeasy vintage classic clone preamp versus Alto minitube preamp

Hi Ron,

When I first bought my Speakeasy pre-amp, I wasn't as blown away as I thought I would be.? It was great but didnt give me the WOW factor.? However, a few months later, I went to a first jam for a new band and I forgot one power cord.? So I did without my Speakeasy preamp playing with the settings on my Roland 300SX piano and Roland V Combo organ.? About half way through someone found another cord.? So I put the SE preamp in the chain and WOW!? What a difference.? The guys were amazed as was I.? I had never had such a clear demonstration.

I use it always now.? Your mileage may vary YMMV.

I'm a little confused by all this preamp stuff. Seems there's not
much difference between the Speakeasy and Alto. Makes me wonder
whether there's much difference among Speakeasy, Alto, and "none". I
think it probably all comes down to "tweaking" the system you have,
and what sounds good to you, which is very subjective. Most of us
probably believe that B-3/122/147 is the "gold standard", but that
combo is all over the map from "heavenly" to "just OK". My current
rig is a CX-3/Pro-145. When I first got the CX-3, I was a little
disappointed with the sound it put out, and even when I added the
rotary amp, it still wasn't what I was looking for. However,
after "tweaking" both the board and the amp through trial-and-error,
I've arrived at the sound that pleases me. I doubt whether an
additional piece of gear would add much, at least to my ear, but as
always, YMMV.
Ron
