Subject:Re: korg cx-3 vs. roland vk-7
"Intelligent consensus"?? That's asking a lot from a group with supporters
of both clones... WOW is it! A lot of us have been playing each of these two
fine clones, for years... until recently I would have shouted to all and
sundry (especially the latter) that the Korg CX-3, Version 2, is the all-time
most authentic, warm-sounding, nearest-to-the-real-deal clo-rgan out there... as
Keyboard said back in '01 when the first version came out, it has "Rolls
Royce sound" (paraphrase), really close to the TWG's... and Version 2 even more
so. And the Leslie sim? EXCELLENT!! I saw a review recently in which someone
claimed the CX-3's Rotary function has got the Hammond XK-3c's beat. I can't
say, I never played that clone; but with the eminent tweakability available
on the Korg, hey - it could be so. I've played/owned many of the clones around
these days; I played an XB-2 for years, then an XK-2, now, since November
2002, this mighty CX-3... and, since 1986, with a Hammond M-102 & Leslie 760 in
attendance.
I started to say... for years I would've sworn the Korg is the best of all
possible clones. And to me it IS; I've gotten more joy and true satisfaction
out of it than any other clone. But as a lot of people have been posting
lately... enjoyment of a Hammond Organ clone/wanna-B is truly subjective. What
someone else hates or loves may be completely opposite to your experience.
Years ago before I bought the XK-2, I tried a VK-7 in Sam Ash, and was genuinely
impressed. But FOR ME, the Korg is IT... the keys (the Korg uses truer organ
keys while the VK-7, the synth-y type), the fine Leslie sim, and the layout
of the V/C knob & the percussion tabs remind me of Hammond consoles... and the
two sets of drawbars. And everything is so tweakable! But who can say; so
many Hammond sounds we all know from recordings were produced on organs in so
many levels of wear, disrepair, age, replaced parts... in varying degrees of
road wear and all else... as has been said, what you like from one person's
Hammond sound may be heard as different by someone else. And isn't this kind of
subjectivity the case with almost everything anyway?
Just try 'em all, or as many as you need 'til you feel RIGHT about what
you're playing. You'll know it when you find it. Enjoy the search!
Best - Adam
