Surely by simply adding another USB port to the "black box" you could accommodate a USB memory stick loaded with any necessary drivers and thus remove the need for an onboard drive. But in any case, is the data sent from a so-called "USB-MIDI" port not simply an encoded version of MIDI data? If not, it should not really be called "MIDI" at all.
