Subject:OT midi question
Hi guys,
MIDI as it's seen is on evolution, the thing seems to be 'have your pocket ready !
It's not the same using a DB15 connector on the back of a bare SoundBlaster than having to buy an external 'M-IDI box' :) usually to be used as USB or Firewire if external or mere PCI if internal (case of my EMU Proteus X, saddly discontinued).
Believe me, serial and MIDI ports got me wakeing up as a 'bargain-hunter' as found me surrounding some 'flea markets' just looking for PC brackets featuring DB15 female (OR DB9 male) just for the case if needed building my own cables.
On a lucky day got a MIDI with dual DB15 , one for game stck an another for having MIDI IN/OUT DIN connectors , and for 3 bucks ! :)
In a few time ahead, these things will be rare coins unless in this global village where the only thing assured are faster changes.
Worst yet when, I needed to burn microprocessor with software PC based my last Cmpq notebook accepts almost any imaginable flash memory card, but saddly doesn't longer offer a serial port nor parallel female conn. usually needed for not very all printers and/or automation purposes.
Even there are cases of S/PDIF are announced as features, but as 'board socket' but not directly available in the backpanel :(
It happened with two of my Asxs mainboards.
Keep and eye on your old PCs before discarding !
BTW , any hint about a desktop sound mixer that having analog features would be also usable as S/PDIF or better yet Firewire ?
My notebook tells that have S/PDIF but only thru a copper track of a connector known as 'Expansion Port 3'
Was looking on BHRINGR Xenyx series.
Btw, anything under 400 bucks in 12/16 channels models ?
Any hint will be highly appreciated.

Hi Chuck,
Unfortunately, the answer is no. The "square" USB plug means the device is a peripheral, not a host. That means that it cannot provide a connection for a USB-to-MIDI interface. USB doesn't work that way. The only alternative would be to put a PC/Mac in between the devices, and link them in software.
