Sorry to say,
turning down the leslie power amp and cranking the preamp will not
give you the tone you seek.
The classic overdriven leslie sound is obtained from POWER AMP tubes
being overdriven. PREAMP TUBES being overdriven doesn't produce that
magic sound.
When preamp tubes overdrive you get a somewhat fizzy buzzy sound, but
when power amp tubes overdrive you get smooth creamy goodness.
What that means for a real tube leslie amp is that it has to be loud
to sound right. The only solutions I know of are to mic it in a
distant room, or use a power amp as an effects device with a line
output tapped from it, then drive the actual speakers with a clean amp
that can be throttled down to bearable listening volume.
You can hear examples of my Speakeasy AMA do this on my roadbox page,
but you could also consider modding your leslie amp to do the same
thing.
