I used to mount those threaded flanges outside the Leslie on the back face. I would then attach short goosenecks to the flanges. The reason being if the mics are too far inside the cabiner the Leslie effect is too "choppy". At least for me.
With them mounted outside on flanges and goosenecks you can adjust the mic distance to taste for more or less of a pronounced chorale effect. If you decides he likes the mic inside all he has to do is crank the goosenck so it places the mic closer to the sound.
Moving the mic slightly away from the mouth of the horn and rotor produces a smoother choral.
Of course taste varies from player to player.

I've been asked for pointers about mic'ing a Leslie in the past, and a recent request prompted me to put some photos up on my site --

Most of the parts that you need can be found at a hardware store, plus a trip to a music store. The hardest part is the right mic's clip adapter, which is a custom-made piece. Once in place, my 3-mic stereo setup takes about than 1 minute to connect to the board.
Everything is vibration-isolated for the best sound. The upper mics are SM57s -- albeit with optional windscreens to minimize noise. The lower mic is the wonderful Heil PR40, with its super bass response.
I used to offer the adapters on my website (AshbySolutions.com), but took them down due to lack of interest. If there was enough interest, I could offer them again, assuming my parts sources are still alive. Please hit me OFFLINE if you are interested.
