Subject:Re: [CWSG]To Record in Stereo or Mono
You describe two recording situations - at 'home' and in a pro studio.
In both cases I have to say this. Mixer inputs and recording tracks - whether hard disk or
tape - have never been cheaper. I have a Y* P90 piano and it definitely sounds better in
stereo. I also have a real/mini 'Leslie' in a Motion Sound Pro3t/LoPro and that also sounds far
better/spacious recorded in stereo. Rhodes is inherently a mono source, but a good stereo
chorus turns it into a source requiring, well, stereo. Not all songs will require all three at
once, after all.
Regarding Leslie emulation, commit something to CD, even a solo performance, and play it
for musicians whom you trust. If they don't make a face, you can probably record direct.
Stereo. If they DO make faces, do what you can to find (or ask the studio to) an actual Leslie
or Motion Sound unit. There is online info regarding optimal mic placement for Leslies.
So take your six tracks at home and in the studio as your due as the keys player. If you don't,
whenever you listen to the tunes, you'll be thinking 'it coulda sounded better'.
