It would depend on the music you intend to record.? Are you doing a Santana record or a B-52's Rock Lobster album? Hobby or not, what you have in mind is what you should do. This is why there is usually a producer involved in a recording. This way the recording does not become a drummer's album or some other instrument if it's not an instrumental album. The end product is king. Even if you are just doing this for fun, you may not pass this way again. Do what your heart says. A real leslie makes a difference.

Recording can get narcissistic specially to the inexperienced.

I have just started recording again after 25 years off. Most of my stuff is

classic rock with a lot of acoustic piano, Rhodes and Hammond. When I

record three separate parts in stereo at different times, I take up 6 inputs and

my guitar guy/"freebie" recording engineer gets a little agitated although he

loves the parts. I have convinced myself that the acoustic piano samples on

the Yamaha S-90 sound better in stereo than mono. As for the simulated

Leslie emulation coming out of my Hammond XK-1, I have guessed that stereo sounds

better than mono. I haven't done any serious listening test. One of my

bands is going into a real recording studio and paying a real recording

engineer. Should I insist on a real Leslie if they can get one and deal with the

troubles of recording "live"? My gut is that my band doesn't want to do this

because of the time, expense and hassle. I am not sure I want the hassle.

Going direct to the board will just be so much easier. My Leslie emulations

through my XK-1 sound pretty good to my ears. Any thoughts? I do this as a

very serious hobby--not to make a living.
