Subject:Re: ART preamp vs Speakeasy Clone

Hey, going thru the archives, cleaning up my system, I ran across
this post again, and it got me thinking... So I decided to try one of
these out, despite the raging battle between low-voltage vs. high-
voltage tube pres. I have to say, I was quite suprized how nice this
sounded with my vk8m.
BUT, and I have to say BUT. Because it does sound much different and
unlike the natural characteristics of the other preamp you tried, and
decided not to spend the $$$ on, I have a few ideas you may want to
try out, that I think will get you better results for your electro.
My setup goes like this. VK8m --> Tube MP -->1/3Oct EQ --> 2101.
MY VK8m EQ: Low = -2db, Mid = flat, High=+9db.

Art Tube MP: all button features off (keyboard imped. input setting)
1/4" from VK8m to XLR into ART.
Input Gain knob at 100% --- yes 100% -my VK8m's main volume sits at
around 50%, and I'll adjust that for more or less tube drive. I may
be wrong, but I think the AO-xx organ preamps run at high voltage all
the time regardless of your expression pedal position. So why not a
the ART or even the SE (I ran my SE at 100% also)
Don't use the FET limiter (unless you're using Electro's OD only)
1/3 Oct EQ: generally flat until about 1khz, I slope down to about -
9db at 3.5khz and stay at -9db thru 8khz.
I do use the "cabinet resonance" effect on my 2101, which sounds
quite nice.
I still think the Electro and VK8m have excellent overdrive effects,
but seem to be a touch weak in processing the higher frequencies
(3khz and above) for most of us, it doesn't really bother us, but if
you really want those extra little details, a tube pre does the
trick. I'm happy to say that the ART can do this (although not
perfect as others) quite nicely for the buck.
