I don't think you need tubes if you want a NEUTRAL uncolored sound.
If you like the "character" that tubes provide go ahead, get tubes.
As an experiment I wired an NAD home solid state pre amp into a Hafler solid
state power amp and then into my Leslie 900 cabinet.
I thought it sounded great. My VK8m provides a little grit when I need it,
but honestly I really like clean undistorted power. I am unbiased regarding
tubes or no tubes. The solid state stuff did not sound harsh or shrill as some
claim.
Also ... I played a Hammond chop with a Trek II solid state pre installed
recently and it sounded great to me. In fact it was one of the nicest sounding
Hammonds I ever played.
