Bruce,
Did you ever use any Altec?

There are many possibilities, depending on your power needs, your wallet,
and your luck. The Jensen V21 is the standard, but is hard pressed to take
the 40W tube amp in a 122/147, unless your sound is pure and clean. Other
vintage choices:
- The Atlas PD-60 is good, although a little brighter. They can handle more
power (50-60W), but go easy.
- The EV1823 -- the old one that looked like a gear -- is a good choice, but
hard to find. This is a 90W driver. I used one for several years in rock
bands, and they are indestructible.
- The JBL 2485J was an industry standard for FrankenLeslies in the '70s and
'80s. Again, this is a difficult find, but it can really take some power.
- Goff Professional used to sell a black driver -- reportedly made by Atlas
-- that sounds good and takes power. It's the one that used to come with a
power resistor in parallel with the driver.
In new drivers:
- I've never heard the Speakeasy SE21, but I've heard their other drivers,
and I'll bet it's a great choice. Again, it's not for a 200W monster Leslie.
- The Speakeasy Hot-Rod is a good choice if you want a little extra edge and
more power handling. (This might not be a bad thing, depending on your
taste.)
- The PD-60A is good, but not as good as the older PD-60, IMHO.
- The Selenium D405i (NOT the D405Ti) sounds fantastic -- if you don't mind
the 19 lbs. (8,5kg) of weight! It also only comes in 8 Ohms, and requires a
custom adapter to fit on a Leslie horn, due to its 2" throat. I use one in
my LowBoy From HellT.
Regards,
-BW
