Subject:Re: Future of the Organ
Yep, I heard that too. This is especially true when one plays with pipe organ-like drawbar settings. If you have the high "whistles" out, it sounds churchy. Add chorus C-3 and overdrive and it will sound more rock/blues like. Also use of the leslie and expression pedal will make the organ sound less "baroque pipe organ".
The playing style is also important: smears wipes and glissandi are essential to the Hammond. If one plays too clean, a pipe organ feel will be the result.
BTW: I am a huge fan of (good) prog rock. Some players used spinet models without chorus/vib and leslie always on slow. To people with a small musical background this might sound like "wedding/funeral", and they would say the same about an awesome huge baroque pipe organ playing a Bach toccata, and they would dismiss fantastic theater organ playing as "ice skate ring music", "amusement park music" or "ballpark music".
Keyboarders always were the uncoolest of all musicians in a rock band. Bands like The Beatloes and The Rolling Stones don't (didn't) even have a keyboarder except for studio overdubs. Unfortunately the times of the "1970s super group - Genesis, Supertramp, Boston, Styx, Toto etc. etc. etc." are long gone, where the keyboarders were someting like mysterious magicians operating 19th century - like machinery until the 1980s brought high-tech glitz. That 60s/70s magic (and even the 80s glitz) is gone for good and has now been replaced by being cool, young and handsome. Oh and those drummers. I am bored to tears by today's pop music where drummers are protools-style-edited to death. Where are all those killer fills of the past? They were replacaed by tatoos and biceps.
I'd say: forget dull and mediocre mainstream taste and do what you love. Long live the Hammond.
