Subject:Re: OT- Oh No ! ARRIVAL is back-OT
Dream Theater is still alive and kicking obviously, so they've survived the 80s thing; they are naturally going to play to a select audience because of what they do (prog/neo-prog/metal), but obviously they are able to sustain a good quality of life doing it. I much preferred their music with Sherinian (Falling Into Infinity is a great record, and tempers their chops with good arrangements) and Moore, but am kind of worn out before the end of any of their later records. I am going to see them in a couple weeks as I’ve never seen Rudess play, so should be interesting.

What's sad, is the hair bands dragged down some really good talent that got pigeon holed into the genre.
A good example would be Extreme. Their album, "3 Sides to Every Story" is an relatively unknown masterpiece. Nuno is a heck of a guitar player. Listen to the horn Re-mix of "Cupids Dead" for some pretty tasteful keys.
Another band of The Era was Dream Theater. Technical Wankery in all it's glory. But in a good way. Moore, Sherinian and Rudess are all very, very good keyboard players. Petrucci is incredible. Myung is under-rated and unknown. And Portnoy, well, he's Portnoy. (The only thing bigger than his ego is his drum set.) But the guy IS good.
