Josh,

I have a MS KBR-3D (rotating horn/rotor sim) and a MS Pro-145 (the
real deal - well, OK, it's not a 122, but pretty darn good enough).
To my ear, the sim is sort of back-and-forth rather than swirly,
while the real rotor has all kinds of liquidy goodness that I think
just can't be captured by stationary speakers. If played in a band
setting through a PA, you might not notice, but played solo in a
quiet room, it's worlds apart.
