I believe that the tubes in the xk-3 are chinese 12ax7s. The cheaper chinese tubes tend to sound a little thin and won't have the sweetest overdrive sound. You can improve the sound with some better quality tubes. btw, most tubes sold in music stores are new chinese tubes.
