I use a Yamaha PSR-3000 Arranger keyboard for drum tracks and I play live LH
bass to that for my first stereo track into my Yamaha AW16G Digital Audio
Workstation. I then overdub the other parts on other tracks. There is no
quantizing capabilities as it is a realtime recorder. I kind of prefer this
setup as it is like playing to a drummer listening to a clicktrack and the
band follows him. It's only as perfect as you play it. It still has that
slightly imperfect "band feel" to the tracks. I just bought some KRK Rockit
5 powered studio monitors on Ebay that are awesome for about $260.00 I run
all my instruments into my Mackie DFX-12 mixer and then into my Speakeasy
Stereo preamp. Drums, bass, everything. Maybe a weird way of doing things
but it seems to work. The AW16G has some nice effects and I EQ instruments
using the Mackie mixer and the Speakeasy as I record them. Of course my Nord
Electro is very involved and just an older Motif module.
It's kind of "old school" way of recording but doing this at home I can go
over and over a track till I get it right without boring some engineer to
tears or burning up money. I love this new technology putting the music
production into the hands of the artist. As far as drum tracks I haven't the
patience to do kick and snare and toms, etc. seperately. I just use the
"styles" on the Yamaha PSR3000. So far I haven't run out of rhythms. This
instrument is a lot deeper than I have dug into it which is cool as I can
grow with it. I can build my own drum patterns if I choose to. I will
eventually but the sounds are really good!
There are so many ways to go these days and this is just what I am doing.
