Hi All,
I would have to agree that the results seem stacked towards the Kurzweil products. In particular, the "B-3 organ" examples are very different; the VK8 seems to set to something like 84 8000 000, while the others are closer to 88 8844 448. The "Wurlitzer" settings were all over the map, too -- some of them barely sounded like a Wurli. I know I can get better Wurli sounds on my FXR than the F8 sounds in the Roland category.
The concept is fantastic, and I wish that we had something similar for clonewheels. However, the "Proudly Sponsored by Kurzweil Music Systems" logo leaves both the objectivity of the tests, and the ability to actually level the playing field in question. A recent test of three clones in my practice room highlighted the fact that the more experience one has with a particular setup, the easier it is to get great sounds. There was probably great access to Kurzweil support during the tests; less so for the other manufacturers, I suspect.
One thing that jumped out to me: The concept of a "perfect Clavinet" has more variation than practically any sound I've ever heard!
Regards,
-BW
