Subject:Re: sewing machine motors
Legend has it that Don Leslie adopted sewing machine motors for his initial
experiments and kept with them because they were cheap. The challenge is
finding a motor control that provides enough torque and can run indefinitely
at fractional speed without overheating. A consumer sewing machine doesn't
run long at all, so heat isn't as much of a problem. Solid state
controllers that can do the job are pretty expensive. If people have been
making Leslies out of phonographs and cooling fans, I'm sure somebody has
tried a sewing machine footpedal, too.
