Subject:Re: What the charter says....
I'll try to keep this brief. First, any manufacturer's representative
who can give us information about their products and possibly gather
feedback and input from our group, is welcome here. We've had people
from Korg and Nord show up and my take is that it's generally a Good
Thing. Diversi would be another example, where the product is of
interest to our group as it is getting ready to ship.
Speakeasy is a bit different, because they not only manufacture
products but also sell them, directly and also offer services. From
what I've seen and heard, and based on my own experiences, I think
Steve works on a very professional level and is not trolling for
customers. Unlike the early days of Speakeasy, when they had one
product and then announced variations of the preamp from time to time,
it feels like SVM is coming out with new products and announcing
partnerships every week. I don't have a problem with Steve popping in
and making a quick announcement, with a link to more product info.
Again, the line's a bit blurred because they also sell their products
directly. And some people might feel that Steve is not participating
much here, since it appears to me that Steve prefers to speak on the
phone over emails or threads. (I am not referring to the Speakeasy
group, because I have not been there yet - I am just referring to this
group and the Electro group)
There are some retailers here who offer timely advice and when it
comes to talking prices, simply say "drop me a line or call". Tony of
BT Productions comes to mind. I think we're all better off for having
Tony drop in and occasionally post.
It's also fine for someone to post about selling their gear, but we'd
like all questions and followup to happen off the group, in private
emails.
If someone is posting only for the purpose of getting business from
our group and does not participate otherwise, that would be the sort
of posts we would discourage.
