Subject:Re: re New Preamp Product News - ????????
My take, for what it is worth. I currently own an AMA and used to own a
stereo preamp.
1. The preamp will NOT give you leslie grind. It WILL give you a bit of grit
and warm up any digital keyboard you play through it.
2. The AMA's 10 watt power amp section WILL give you leslie grind. The
signature grind or frying eggs sound of a leslie is the sound of the power
tubes being driven hard.
3. The AMA's power amp will not work particularly well with a tube leslie
amp after it. This is speculation, as I haven't tried it. However, I did try
running two preamps in series - a Hammond with AO-28 preamp into the preamp
in the AMA. It sounded thin and pinched.
This is because you get coloration along with the tube tone, and applying a
preamp twice will cause you to get that coloration twice. I would expect the
same to be true with two tube power amps.
However, this is an experiment I could try as soon as my AMA gets back home.
Remind me next week sometime and I'll give it a whirl.
