Subject:Re: Should I buy a Speakeasy clone preamp?

If you haven’t heard the Speakeasy preamp yet you should. It is not like
other tube preamps.

I don’t use one with my C-3 or BC but then again they certainly have no need
for it.

Since I have listened to the XK3 live with and with out Steve’s preamp and
if I were to use an Xk3 I certainly would have a Speakeasy pre on it.

When someone actually makes a clone that has the whole Vintage Hammond
Sound, then there will be no need for the present day Speakeasy products for
the clones.

Dave Bradley recently posted this link to his system:

There are videos and audio files for a number of sounds. Granted he is not
using a XK3 but instead a Nord stage. Take a listen!

Ryan Stroup from this list uses an XK3 and a speakeasy preamp. Perhaps it
would be a good idea to contact him.

Ryan also has posted videos and sound clips of his setup.

Go ahead. I triple dog dare you!

I meant new to the group. If you research old posts you will probably
see why.

Now to answer your question. I own an XK-3 and a 3300 and don't feel
the XK-3 needs any help. I have found that a variety of $5 tubes
brings a nice change of pace now and then. Others feel differently. I
haven't heard the Motion Sound stuff live so I don't know if it needs
help either. I also don't know that adding a preamp to the chain
(Speakeasy or otherwise) will provide that help. Other tube preamps I
had and used with old gear to warm up the digital tone took more away
from the tone of the XK-3 than they added (IMO). You might just buy
the XK-3c and the Motion Sound and try them for a while to see how
you like them. Then consider what might be a better/more useful
addition, a preamp or the lower manual for the System.

Good Luck
