The 147 -- technically, 47 -- series was kind of a clean slate, as it came afterwards. It was designed to be able to tap into the power amp, right across the speakers. Since this is a much lower impedance connection, and since it didn't need to be balanced, only one wire (plus ground) was needed for the connection, and the 6-pin cable was fine.
BTW, the old-style 147 switch has live 120/240V AC inside, and would never pass today's UL/CE/CSA requirements.
The sound of a 122 and a 147 aren't exactly the same, although they're very close. The 147 amp has a different electronic design, and a slightly better high-frequency response. Granted, we're probably talking 5K vs. 6K or something, but it's there. ;-)
Regards,
-BW
