Yep, unfortunately I read my emails from newest to oldest, so I had already responded about this by the time I saw Dave's and your's. But we are on the same page with this.

In a nut shell, 147's use AC voltage to switch speeds so the console
switch directly controls the relay in the amp. A 122 uses DC voltage.
The 12AU7 control tube senses this voltage and turns on or off the
switching relay, so that's why there's an extra second or two delay.
