Subject:Re: Another crazy Leslie idea?
Yep.
This has always felt more of a Hammond tech than an organ players' forum.

Hi All,
I don't want to start a flame war here, but Ron *does* have a point. There's so much emphasis on *gear* in this list, that *chops* seem to take a serious back seat. A monster player like John Novello, Joey D, Chester Thompson, or Barbara Dennerlein (sp?) probably sounds better on great gear, but any of them could whip my a** on a $169 Casio -- spotting me a pristine '65 B-3 and a pair of Leslie 122s for the match. Bottom line: chops beat any other item, hands down. I think that was the point of the earlier message. This list keeps searching for the Holy Grail of B-3 sound, but after a certain point, it's kind of a pointless gesture, don't you think? I have resisted the temptation to swap my BX-3 for something newer, and in the process I've stumbled upon a great sound, that feels good to my hands. That *should* be the end of the story.
Personally -- and I know that this will probably come as a surprise to a few -- I could personally care less what a Leslie sounds like with a brass horn, or shuttered louvers, or any of the other hot-rod modifications. I love the stock sound of a mid-'60s Leslie, more or less, and have spent years figuring out how to coax that out of non-vintage gear. THAT's cloning a Hammond + Leslie, IMHO.

BTW, Ignoring the threads is a great approach -- except that few if any of the list members actually rename threads when they veer off; thus, most of us have to read at least the first paragraph of each email.
Regards,
-BW
