Subject:Re: about preamps....

There are any number of tube preamps and amps you can play through. I really
only have experience with real tube leslie amps and the AMA/preamp combo.

I did a bunch of experiments recently and found this:

1. The preamp's overdrive sound I would describe as "fizzy".
2. The poweramp's overdrive sound I would describe as "creamy, frying egg
sizzle" - the classic leslie amp tone.

So in my opinion, "the sound" is the sound of power tubes being overdriven,
not preamp tubes. The AMA uses basic leslie amp wiring but with 10W 6V6
power tubes instead of 40W 6550s. To my ears the sound of the amp is the
same as the real thing. In fact, the largest differences by far are in the
sound of the actual Roadbox cabinets and their higher powered components
compared to a stock leslie.

Nevertheless, I still plan to have a bit of fun trying different brands of
the 6V6 tubes. Changing tube brands can really result in a different sound
I've found.
