Subject:Re: XK3 Tube Question for David Jaques

I forgot to add where to place your finger this time. Use your
fingertip to hold the edge of the board steady - to the left of the
tubes looking down from behind the XK-3. Don't just press down on the
center of the board while pulling up on the tubes. With all those
tubes, don't bother putting the screws back in for a while unless you
have to move it. The 12AT7 tubes are a little different
electronically than 12AX7's, they don't just provide a little lower
gain. I think they are designed for a higher heater current or
something. It is a small difference. I've tried them in my XK-3 and
they didn't sound bad and they didn't let the smoke out of anything.
But they sound better to me in a 3300.

Good Luck - the tone is in the tubes.
