The scrim cloth ties at the top and bottom. If the cloth is still good
(not rotten) you should be able to replace the string with some good
quality hemp material. It takes many years for it to rot.
I believe the original intention for the scrim cloth was to quiet the
"Swoosh" noise a naked lower rotor can make. In Tony Monaco's Hammond
instructional DVDs, he recommend a scrim for those that leave the
lower box open, for micing purpose. It the rotor is not scrimmed, it
will slice your hands quite nicely when kicked on during mic
adjusting. The edges of the lower wood rotor can be very dangerous
spinning at over 400 rpm.
