I've never warmed up to the foam rotors, but for a different reason. Actually, the sound is pretty much the same; the Leslie rotor mostly just points the low frequency sound in a different direction. It could be made of almost any material, and the sound would be about the same.
The biggest problem with the foam rotors is long-term reliability. They tend to loosen up and wobble after they've worn in. It usually takes a some time to notice any difference, and unfortunately, moving the Leslie around (i.e., gigging) probably makes things worse. And of course, be careful if you need to mic the Leslie at gigs, because the foam nicks easily.
