Guys,
I’ve been playing trio around Montreal for the several years.Mostly
standards and blues.I’m an older guy (50’s) and do repetoire from Jimmy
Smith to Larry Young. Two points. The guitarist has to know how to comp for
organ and the drummer has to know that the ride for organ bass is not the
same as for double bass.I try to play with players would are familiar with
the idiom.Have you people Larry Goldings and Sam Yahel?
Lorrie

Adan,
I am glad you find this thread interesting and I am happy to know I
can talk/share/discuss with you about this. Can you please tell me
what are you going to use as pre-amp/amp? I will play in places that
have no amplification system. They are also kinda small and often
outdoors. I am sure I will need to bring something ballsy with me but
again, my "amp" slot is totally free and I intend to get something
that is good and "peace-maker" in the sense of GAS, at least for what
I need now.
I am not a great pedal player myself, mostly accenting rather than
full walking bass. I thought about adding an upright bass player to
the band but in all sincerity, I find myself more in trouble to stop
walking the bass in my left hand and start comping. It's a weird
thing, I know, considering that I come from piano but in a sense I
know that organ comping is not the same of piano comping. It has
nothing to do with school-time voicings etc. it's about a role I am
not kinda used to have and sound good. Sound good is mostly the thing
here, so I should have wrote: I sound better when walking+melody/-solo/
blockvoicing than when comping+solo. Adding an upright wouldn't be a
problem for the club owners, as long as they can fill an additional
glass with good red wine.
I still haven't received any reply from the Organ-Ized forum..which
seems mostly a spam wasteland. Maybe it's time to open an "Organ
Trio" yahoogroup to support each with gig reports, tricks, questions
about standards and tunes (man do I have questions about some bop
tunes!).
Anyway, I don't want to be a hassle right now (make sure you
pronounce it right :D) so I'll pause here and wrap it up but I
definitely want to know more and more about this. It is going to make
more prepared and it's going to make my practice routine more
productive.
Thanks again!
