Thanks guys,

I mis-spoke. I did have the UM1 out -> CX-3 in, CX-3 thru -> DM5 in,
DM-5 out/thru to UM1 in. The only thing missed was setting Thru on the
DM-5. That said, still no joy. Aside from the idiot lights on the UM1,
what other tools do I have to debug this? The UM1 out blinks with the
metronome
from cakewalk when recording, but nothing on the UM1's input indicator at
all.

As for how I want to use this, there's no intent to play either instrument
from
the other. Just to record and play back each from Cakewalk or other
sequencer
software.
