I didn't know they made firewire midi interfaces. I'd be interested in
knowing more about this stuff as well. I've been wanting to record
some MIDI files that can be played thru the B4 program using my
laptop. This is not for gigs but rather a teaching project.

I have a Gateway MX3417 notebook with an AMD Turion 64 2.0ghz
processor, 1GB of memory, NVIDIA GeForce Go 6100 128MB graphics card,
80GB hard drive, usb, LAN, wireless, bla bla bla. Overall performance
is excellent, which is to be expected from a computer using an AMD
chip (I will never buy nor build a PC with an Intel chip). However,
when it comes to MIDI, using a USB midi cable, the latency is
terrible. Recording on the piano worked just fine. There's still a
good amount of latency, but for recording a simple one track MIDI,
that's not an issue. However, it will become an issue when composing
multi-track MIDI's.

Trying to record from the XK3 was pretty much impossible. Most notes
never registered on the computer. It was all very inconsistent and
made it impossible to continue working on that project. So I'd be
interested as well in what you all use for your laptops to eliminate
latency issues and to create a more stable MIDI interface.
