Subject:Re: Live with Laptop?
Hi,
I'll just describe options and known facts when
playing clonewheel software:
1. Muse Receptor (not CPU required as everything is
built-in, except the keyboard and cables.
Not cheap.
2. Logicpro former versions.
I got frustrated with version 5x,
Win versions are not longer supported.
Furthermore when I subscribed to the Yahoogroups
specialized forum, nobody responded. Guess that
mentioning WINDOWS was the 'magic wand' to get close
doors there.
If you like version 7, includes the whooping tag of a
full armored mac.
IMHO if your need a dependable solution for gigging
having a clone module is the way to go , there a few
options out there, I'd say hurry up ! ,
I was told by a peer that one of the leading brands
will be discontinuing their module soon, your
notebooks will say you thanks a lot !
3. If software is the election, specifically Native,
go out there and will see that with B4 you'll not be
tied to a specific platform, as their binaries run on
PC as long with Mac as swell.
4. The 'fuller' sound is proven to be got when the
stuff is played thru a real Leslie as the best think
to be got in the wishlist, except you're a gigging
musician where other factors should be considered.
IMHO even Farfisas sounded uncredibly amazing thru
real Leslies , was late 60's or early 70's (i.e.
PinkFloyd )
5. Firewire over USB 2.0 : choosing is matter of
choice. It's easier to find USB connectors on
notebooks rather than Firewire.
The core engine of B4 is the audio card and speed
processor (minimum recommended PIII 800 Mhz, despite
that basic requirements are lower than that.
Latency is an issue if not having an ASIO featured
soundcard or ASIO software drivers.
Sound delays can be considered a problem rather than
lacking RAM over 1GB . It's more crucial even more
that mecatronics specs, like rpm disk spinning.
Latency will make that the heard signal comes back
with a perceptible delay if compared with the moment
when a key is pressed.
Hope that helps.

You should definately get 2GB. Everything will go
smoother, and you can easy load big
samples without any big hickups. Still, take this
from a guy who really wanted to make laptop for live
playing work - working with midi keyboards and laptops
are sooooo uninspiring. I just got a Clavia C1, and
the difference is night and day. Not only do you
have the estethics of it all (more fun to play a well
designed and crafted instrument), there
is also the matter of the tactile response of the
instrument (laptops = more latency (NB:
use firewire for more consistant latency, not USB)).
I've come to the conclusion that a laptop can be a
nice addition to a live setup, but should
not be the center of a (midi) keyboard rig.
Others might disagree, but this is my opinion.
Btw, I would rather use EVB3 and logic pro 7, than
B4II. EVB3 has more tuning options, and
sound a bit "fuller" than B4II. EVB3 also has the
better overdrive IMO.
Good luck
