Subject:Re: OT -- Other NAMM Stuff
Bruce, did you get a gander at the new Motif or V-Synth?
And about the Arturia device, does the hardware come equipped with all that software, or was the device just a host (and the software is purchased seperately)?
Bruce Wahler wrote: Hi All,
There were a lot of things to see at NAMM, but not many that really blew me away. Here are some other things that you might want to look at with are NOT clonewheel related:
- Arturia has a hardware version of their soft-synths which combines the ARP 2600, the Minimoog V, the CS-80, and two other modules into a 4- or 5-space rackmount or desktop unit. In addition to having all that synthesizer power available, there is a mode where one can create a fully modular synth using any of the pieces. ex: Minimoog VCOs with CS-80 filters, etc. This seems like a great way to take Arturia soft-synth sounds to the gig, without the hassle of using a computer on-stage.
- General Music (GEM) is coming out with a new 1/2-space piano module, the RP-X, that has both fantastic piano and EP sounds, and the ability to do significant customization through a PC program. Each patch has up to four sounds, which can be split or layered. The acoustic piano sound was VERY impressive. You'll have to look hard for it, though: the rep told me that GEM requests that their dealers DO NOT advertise the availability or publish features of GEM products on their Websites!
- Motion Sound has a rotary speaker, the SRV-212, that is targeted towards guitarists. It has upper and lower 12" speakers that fire into a single drum rotor. The fast and slow speeds are completely adjustable ("Slow" speed can actually be faster than "Fast") and when Stop is selected, the drum ALWAYS stops with the scoops pointed toward the front; the result is that the stopped cabinet sounds like a 2-12" open-back combo cab. The sound was very impressive. If you play guitar, you really need to check this one out. (If not, drag your guitarist down to look at one.)
- Access Music has released a v2.0 OS for the Virus TI, which adds graintable, formant (vocal-like), and wavetable PWM support. This moves the Virus TI into new ground, providing angry and DX7-like abilities in addition to virtual analog (VA) modeling. I heard some very impressive demos of the new abilities. (Full disclosure: I'm a Virus TI dealer, so my opinion might be jaded; or you might choose to feel that it's so, anyway.)

BTW, somebody on the list was asking for a shallow-depth 2-space rack case. Gator Cases now makes one.
Regards,
-BW
