Tommy sorry if I in any way implied that I thought you were
"competing" against him. First of all, I don't really believe there's
any such thing as a "best" organist or any other type of musician.
We're all individuals as players, and there's no such thing as a
standard which we can be judged against one another to see who's best.
For instance I can do certain licks that Joey D has never learned and
he can do certain ones I never learned. Admittedly, his pile of stuff
I can't do is a ton bigger than my pile that he can't, and I'm sure
given a bit of time he could make my pile all but disappear. If there
were a "best" I guess everybody would go hear that guy and not listen
to the rest of us. But everyone brings something different to the
table and it's a big table with lots of room there.
I'm sure due to the fact that you even have the gig, your playing
is something that Lucky enjoys. When I mentioned it being
intimidating, I wasn't thinking of for you as much as it would be for
me. I've listened to a lot of this guy's playing, and I respect him a
lot as an organ player. Due to that respect, his opinion of my playing
would carry a lot more weight than someone who is tone deaf. If he
smiled at my playing that would pretty well make my day. By the same
token if he said "that guy can't play for crap" it'd be coming from
someone who's ear and technique I respected and I couldn't dismiss
that as easy as the type of musician that thinks anything other than
an inside pentatonic is "wrong notes". I think all of us that are
serious about our music pour a lot of ourselves into our music, and
when our music is rejected there's a tiny bit of us that's rejected,
or at least it feels that way for me. And to have that rejection come
from someone we respect is a bit scarier than someone we could care
less about. Lucky would be one of those people that would carry that
kind of weight for me.
