Townsend & Daltry (sounds like a law firm!) still sounding like The Who is dubious. I bought the DVD of their last tour with Pino Palladino filling in for John, and I've got to say....not so much. I'm a big fan, and have actually enjoyed most of their DVDs (except for the big "Tommy" extravaganza with Billy Idol, Phil Collins, etc....that was a bit Vegas and un-Who-like), but that last tour was pretty unwatchable, at least in the DVD context. I'm sure it was more entertaining live. The main problem now is that the rhythmic aggressive drive that propelled those songs is now missing; Zak Starkey (drums) has done a fantastic job stepping into Moon's shoes (and really is a better fit than Simon Phillips, who I love, and who did a great job with The Who), but Pino (who I also think is a great player) just doesn't have the right piss-n-vinegar approach, and the result is the arrangements are just kind of soggy.
I have not heard the new record, so I can't make any judgments on that new material though.

Rabbit is effectively a member of The Who in all but name - he's been working with them in the studio since shortly after Keith Moon's death in the late seventies and has played live with them at practically every gig. It has been said that the complexity of Moon's drumming made it unnecessary to have a keyboardist or a "lead" guitarist; more recently the loss of John Entwhistle's ultra-melodic bass playing put the future of the whole band in question. But Townshend and Daltrey soldier on, and they still SOUND like The Who!
Just one question. Why don't the remaining Who and the remaining Beatles combine forces? They could be called... er... the "Whootles"? Maybe not.
