Subject:Re: Old BX3 Bad Chorus adjustment
Hi everybody,
I so rarely post here that I should really say "HELLO" again first -
and acknowledge that this is a great and very useful forum!
On topic:
I owned (and loved) two "old" BX-3's until I switched to a VK-7 in
the late 90's (loved that one even more) and recently to a "new" BX-3
which is just wonderful.
Indeed, I agree that what Korg called "Chorus/Vibrato" on the old BX-
3 was, well, not so good ..... in fact they installed a regular
analog chorus circuit (somewhat like the old Boss CE-1 or CE-2) into
the BX-3. Instead of making the depth of this effect switchable (like
on the B-3), the C/V-knob on the old BX-3 governs the speed of the
effect, and only the fastest setting yields something a little like a
C/V on the Hammond. The effect is still too shallow, and has way to
little amplitude modulation but that's just the result of the simple
circuitry.
Your are correct, Ray, in assuming that the effect is adjustable. If
you open the top lid of the BX-3, you will - standing on the keyboard
side of the organ - see a smallish circuit board towards the left-
hand end of the BX-3's box. On this there are two small pots which
control speed and delay time of the chorus effect. You can adjust
them with a screwdriver without risking damage to the BX-3 .........
HOWEVER: typically they are already optimally adjusted and the
character of the effect will unfortunately not really change all that
much by re-adjustment.
I am sorry not to be able to encourage you ....... I basically gave
up on the BX-3's C/V as a simulation of the Hammond C/V and used it
(rarely) as a different effect altogether. What is a bit ironic ist
that (at least to my ears) the fastest C/V-seeting on the BX-3 gave a
better impression of a fast Leslie effect than the actual Leslie
simulation! I found this Leslie simulation very weak which is why I
was using a Dynacord CLS-22 which, in combination with a Hughes and
Kettner Crunchmaster pre-amp, gave a killer sound! Not an authentic
Hammond sound, but a VERY GOOD one!
Continue to enjoy your BX-3 - it is a very useful, fun instrument
(and a dream to transport with all of 45 pounds!).
Greetings from Munich,
