Subject:Re: Leslie Micing
Hi All,
The reason that I mentioned the Heil mic is that it's a modern update of the E-V RE20, which is the answer for many recording engineers when mic'ing a Leslie bottom rotor is the question. The PR40 improves on the neutral sound and imaging of the RE20, requires no additional wind screen, and goes down to 28 legitimate Hertz.
The Audix D-4, while a great mic in its own right, only goes down to 38Hz. The RE20 goes to 45Hz, and the MD421-II goes to 30Hz. The big winner for me is that the PR40 has a very broad, neutral range -- it's almost perfectly ruler-flat from 30Hz to 2kHz, then has a slight bump to 5kHz, then continues ruler-flat to about 15-16kHz. (It's rated as 28Hz to 18kHz.) And with all that, it's still lower cost than either the E-V or Sennheiser. (And man, do I love Sennheiser. I have FOURTEEN of their mics!)
The only real down side is that it weighs almost 1 lb. But to quote someone else on this list: you don't get tone on a diet.
Regards,
-BW
