The worst time I ever had dealing with smoky gear was when I lived and
gigged in Ireland for a few years. The pubs were always inundated with
smoke and my cases and speaker cabinets with covered in that carpet-like
material which absorbed the aroma big time. When I set up my gear at
other places and was asked, I used to refer to the odor as the "smell of
money" ;-) I found the best remedy was to place the gear and cases
outside to air out in the sun. Of course in Ireland that in itself was
a challenge at times :-)

I too, would bet it's been gigged in smoky clubs.
Unfortunately, some of my gear "smokes" too...
