I have a Hammond XK-1 and used it with a 760 leslie for live
performance. I could not be happier with the combination for live
performance. The band always likes the leslie organic experience and
there is almost someone from the audience that comments how much they
like the sound and have not seen a leslie often. I know it's a big
sacrifice to drag a leslie around, but I have it down to a science
where I can load and unload it myself easily. As far as the Xk-1,
Hammond really nailed the authentic hammond sound with this one,
especially the chorus vibrato which was lacking from many organ
clones. I own many vintage hammond organs and enjoy them all, but the
XK-1 is very practical for me. Sometimes I use a leslie 122 for
recording, but for live I prefer the 760. I am sure there are other
keyboards with a better leslie simulator but as far as authentic
hammond I love the Xk-1 with a real leslie. I'm not a purest, I also
really enjoy using EVB3 for recording work and am using it more and
more. It's amazing that we all have so many excellent choices these
days. I think it's all such a personal choice, a BIG factor to me is
the playing surface, e.g drawbars, controls etc and what your style
dictates that you need. Bugs me to play someone's hammond organ clone
rig without a swell pedal. To be honest, I have not played the C1, I
have heard the demos and they sound great. The lack of drawbar
controls and the instrument red finish are enough of a turnoff for me
to not be interested. You would think that if these guys really want
to appeal to Hammond Organ folks, they would try to mimic the controls
and action as close as possible not just work on the sound.
