I have a MOtif rack (not ES - but understand there wasn't much change
between them. The name change was to match when Yamaha changed the
keyboard version from Motif to Motif ES, per Yamaha tech support) and
it is a great unit, especially if you add the DX7 expansion board).
Like you, I did not care for the feel of the Motif's weighted keys
and instead bought a Korg Triton Le88 for the better feel. I also
bought the Motif rack ( came to about the same price as a Motif
keyboard). So, I have the best of both worlds. The Triton is great
but the Piano sounds are better on the MOtif. I would say "Go for
it". Don't waste you money on the expansion board where they sampled
their C3 piano (PLG150Ag) It's a piece of cr@p.
