I also upgraded (due to a crazy fit of: "That's it! I am through playing
live. I am selling my equipment. now I am in a new band"). Long, crazy
story. But I got the call from the new band the same day I sold my XK3. I am
glad that I didn't sell anything else!
I picked up an XK3c from Sweetwater for less than the advertised price. I
get it next Tuesday. I will give you a report when it arrives...

Subject: [Hammond_xk-3] Re: picked up xk3c
I played the demo songs today so I could just listen and compare
them. They both sound great and pretty similar playing the demo
songs. There is a pretty substantial difference when just selecting
the same tonewheel sets and matching drawbar setups though. I can't
figure out why. Maybe it is because sounds go by so fast with the
demos and there is a time lag between the same points in the songs
but slower when holding notes and I can play them both
simultaneously. In general the '3c has a heftier tone that seems to
be more than just slightly louder low frequencies. I haven't started
tweaking the C/V, key click etc. yet. The bias adjustment for the
tubes seems to allow some subtle tone changes that aren't overdrive
but add a little noise/overtones to the sound.
I think this upgrade to the XK-3 is for the player more than the
audience. The tone is different but somebody just listening to the
music probably couldn't tell the difference. The guy playing it
could. The same with the adjustability of the C/V, the preamp and all
the other little details you can dial in until they are just right
(for you) but nobody else probably cares about. The ability to set
the extra knobs to adjust the Tone Control, Bass, Middle, Treble and
Reverb depth and time so you don't have to push buttons or scroll
through menus etc. is very nice and they can be set to control other
things as well.
I'm glad I bought the '3c but I'm not sure that if I was making a
business decision I could/would justify it. The XK-3 is a fantastic
sounding instrument and the new version doesn't lessen that.
