Subject:Re: Clonewheel vs. Tonewheel

After many permutations my CX3 sounds best through a 122. A few weeks ago I purchased the ZOOM H4 portable recording device. Each gig and rehearsal are now recorded - nothing special - just set in the room or space we the music plays. Upon playback I have been incredibly pleased - the exact sound I expect from a B3/Leslie is there - no compromises! I would consider the Speakeasy preamp a part of that sound -- but -- I really do not know. I'm simply forced to run through it to control and run the 122. No real A/B comparisons possible. One very big difference I have noticed using a 122 - far less high end than I had been hearing when using pro3T or keyboard amp. This forced me to rely more upon the upper draw bars and volume increases to cut through the band.

I understand the other amplification systems could now just as easily attenuate the high end - and in fact, I might recommend that to non leslie users. I have come to believe that working the drawbars a little more got me closer to the real deal as well as driving the amplifiers a bit harder.

As an added bonus, I tried the pro3T with the high end wound all the way down - using the same drawbar and volume changes necessary for the 122. Great surprise -- it sounded very very good. I sincerely doubt any but the supreme purists could differentiate.

where all of this leads -- I continue to be extremely pleased with the CX3. I have tried them all. I could be very happy with any latest generation clone out there.
Using a CX3/122/speakeasy combination has given me exactly what I wanted.

note: I have a mid 50's Hammond C3 for home use. Except for the feel and smell of the Hammond, I have come to prefer the sound of the CX3.
