College (Winter Park, FL) in '74 and he had the biggest and coolest
looking Afro I ever saw. The concert was in Rollins gymnasium in
his "Outa Space and "Will It Go Round In Circles" but he also
did "That's The Way God Planned It," my favorite song by him. I was
sitting on the floor less than ten feet from him and there wasn't a
stage, he was playing on the the gym floor. The really cool thing
about this concert was he had formed an all keyboard band. Three
keyboard players and a drummer. I was in heaven and I wish you all
could have been there. Rest in peace Billy, you brought so much joy
to so many.>>
The 3 keyboard player band was on either Johnny Carson or Dick Cavett a couple times. On one appearance they did a rendition of Blackbird that smoked the recorded version (and the recorded version was really great!!). I've always hoped a video of that show would make its way to Youtube. Everyone was playing in that gospelly style Billy excelled at.
I too saw Billy back in the 60's when he was touring with Ray Charles. He, the band & the Raelettes did the whole first set as I recall. Didn't see him again until the early 90's, when the keyboard had for him was a DX-7. That was a real dissapointment allthough he sounded great himself.
