Yes, to get it to growl you have to crank it up all the way. It has to be a
classic tube leslie, and the preamp gain in the Hammond needs to be bumped
up so that it is not so polite. You need good tubes, and the leslie power
tubes in particular need to be good and strong, not that weak Chinese KT-88
crap.
The caps need to be in good shape too. Honestly, a Hammond with Leslie that
is 40+ years old that has never been maintained will generally sound like
crap. Except for the ones that sound magnificent. There's just no predictin'
